Daguerreotype; half-plate; showing view of Richmond from Church Hill with Franklin Street [Grace?] at center; buildings pictured include, from proper right: First Baptist Church, domed City Hall (c. 1818), First Presbyterian Church spire (1853-54); Governor's House; St. Paul's Church (c. 1845); Capitol; Second Presbyterian Church; Christ Church Episcopal in foreground (burned in 1856); housed in dark brown leather case; embossed design on front and back includes oval at center and acanthus leaves throughout; thin gilded rope border; interior of case has faded red velvet cushion facing image; embossed design on velvet has small oval with fancy border at center, wide acanthus leaf inner border and thin gilded rope outer border; small red ribbon tab attached to side of velvet cushion lifts cushion; small slip of grey translucent paper covered in clear tape with handwriting reading "City of Richmond" stored behind the cushion; image is framed with a gilded eight-cornered mat and glass; glass is edged with gilded metal with embossed leaf design. |
