Tell Me Where You're Marching, Tell Me Where You're BoundThis temporary photography exhibition intends to examine the slave trade in Richmond by depicting sites in Richmond at which transportation, imprisonment and burial of slaves took place, but whose physical structures no longer exist. Photographed and guest curated by VCU photography student Shanna Merola, these contemporary images will show three sites in Richmond whose past is likely unknown to many residents. Inspired by the subjects and style of photographer Sally Mann, Merola has employed a pinhole camera to create photographic images of sites in Richmond that were formerly the locations of the Manchester Docks, Lumpkin’s Jail and the Negro Burial Ground. All of these sites are compelling for their absence of any indication of their former purpose; the sites now exist as fields or parking lots. Merola will provide historical context for her images through introductory and section labels. Vitrines in the gallery will be filled with History Center objects associated with the slave trade to further tie Merola’s contemporary photographs to a historic setting.
